bed. So, we have decided that we should get rid of our bed and get a couple air beds and put them next to each other but we are nervous about sleeping on them for the next
five months. We decided air beds because when we went to costco today, the mattress/bedspring combo of a twin sized bed was >$400. To many of you, this may not be very much
money, but to us, it is a little steep. The air beds cost ~$50 a piece, times 2 that puts us back $100...25% of the other bed.
With that said, we feel it's time for another one of our "weird Hawaii" observations. This time, it's about the emergency response vehicles here: They never drive on the opposite side
of the street!!! Now, that may sound a bit confusing, so we'll try to explain. When you're sitting at a stoplight back home (on a two-way street) and traffic is piled up only on your side of the road
and a policeman is in a hurry to get somewhere in the same direction that you are hoping to travel, he/she typically drives to the other side of the road into what would be oncoming traffic and
speeds by you. The same story for ambulances, right? They cut to the opposite side and head to their destination. Here, it is a completely different story. If the above situation were to occur here
as it has several times or we wouldn't be writing about this, the emergency response vehicle goes straight down the middle of the street and all of the cars in the road are expected to move out of the way.
Today, we were on the street in the left lane. There was a left turn lane to our left and a lane to our right that goes straight. A police vehicle was a few cars back and the light was red so we were all
stopped. The police car had it's siren on and started honking from the left (our) lane. The traffic in the opposite direction was non-existant and the car kept honking. Everyone was trying to scatter and we had to
put our nose half way into the right lane as several other cars behind us did while some put their nose into the left turn only lane. The police car drove through and traffic went on as normal. We've experienced the
same situation with ambulances! This is not because of a raised cement thing in the middle of the two directions of traffic either (not that this stops police at home from crossing, but still...). So, we can't figure
it out...perhaps it is because Hawaiian drivers are so unpredictable that they figure they'll take their chances being late? Let us know your ideas...
Tonight is also the first night that our gecko has not eaten the food we put out for him. We know he's not sick because we saw him...we think he's just so fat from all of our food we've been giving him that he can't stuff
any more of it in his stomach!
